Custom Mirrors
Custom Vanity or Bathroom Mirrors
We carry 1/8 in, 3/16 in, and 1/4 in mirror stock up to 8 ft by 4 ft in size. If you need larger, we can combine several mirrors together. We cut your mirrors to match your precise dimensions. Our expert craftsman provide excellent cuts and bevels.
In deciding which mirror thickness to choose, it is important to consider the size of the mirror and the application. For mirrors between 24 and 48 in. wide, a thickness of 3/16 in. is usually standard. These mirrors are often used in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. This thickness provides durability and rigidness, making them safer for high-traffic areas and last longer.
Mirrors for Gyms and Dance Studios
For larger mirrors over 48 in. in width, we recommend 1/4 in. thickness. These mirrors are used in gyms, dance studios, and other large areas where people will be moving around frequently and objects might hit them. The increased thickness provides more stability and durability, making them a safer choice.
Does Thickness Impact Reflective Quality?
Mirrors which are thicker usually provide for a reflected image that is less distorted because the glass surface is more even. A thicker 1/4 in. mirror is also less likely to warp or bow over time.
What Are the Best Ways to Attach Mirrors to a Wall?
We have several different methods of attaching mirrors to a wall.
The first is to glue it to the wall surface. The benefits are that it is completely flat against the wall and there are no brackets or clips showing. The downside of gluing a mirror to the wall is that it can't be removed without breaking the mirror. It also could fall after many years. There is no option to move it if your decorations or furniture changes.
Another method is to use metal channels on the top and bottom of the mirror. These J-shaped channels are usually made of anodized aluminum. They are screwed onto the wall first and then the mirror slides into them hiding the screws so you just have a clean border on the top and bottom. You can get them in a few different colors like brushed nickel, bronze, and chrome, or you can paint them any color you want.
We also have the clear plastic mirror clips that are attached with screws to the wall. These are low cost and blend into the wall and mirror, providing an attractive appearance.
There are also nickel plated adjustable metal clips available for a stronger setup that looks more industrial or commercial.
Which Mirror Beveled Edges Are Available?
Beveled edges on mirrors can have a width of 1/4 in. to 2 in. on mirrors 3/16 in. in thickness and thicker. The outside edge of the bevels can be as thin as 1/8 in. We can put a bevel on rectangular, square, circular, and oval mirrors.
Mirror Shapes Available
We can cut any shape of mirror, within reason, that you want. We can do circles and ovals as well. We can only put a seamed or polished edge on custom shapes though. For a striking look and higher end appearance, consider having small rounded corners on your mirror.
Mirror Edge Types and Edgework
Seamed Edge is an industry term meaning after the glass is "cut" that the sharp edges are roughly sanded to make them safe to handle so you don't get cut. They are not as nice looking as a polished edge.
Polished Edge means the sharp edges of a mirror are sanded and polished so they are like glass in appearance and smooth to the touch. A polished edge will feel very smooth, similar to the face of the glass. The faint greenish or blueish tint is the natural color of the glass when viewed in profile.
Ground Edge means an opaque, matte, non-reflective, light greenish or bluish tint edge that is slightly rounded. A ground edge will have a texture similar to fine sandpaper, and its appearance will contrast significantly with the smooth face of the glass. Grind Edges are generally less noticeable and less “eye-catching” than polished edges.
